West Bengal's first radar operating station, aimed at strengthening the coastal surveillance network, was inaugurated here today.
At a function, Governor KN Tripathi commissioned the remote operating station which is armed with the latest technology for surveillance, meteorological and communication facilities.
Inspector General KR Nautiyal, Coast Guard Commander, said a radar network had been set up at the Gangasagar lighthouse but because of its strategic location, Haldia was chosen as the base for setting up the remote operating station.
The project employs high-end surveillance gadgets such as frequency diversity radar, electro-optic sensors, day camera, low light TV, night camera and long-range thermal imagers, VHF sets, Met equipment on lighthouses and masts erected on lighthouse land.
The data generated by the static sensors flows over a robust hierarchical network architecture, connecting the Coast Guard district headquarters and regional headquarters with their New Delhi control room.
Nautiyal said the station was armed with latest technology for surveillance, meteorological and communication facilities.
With this, the Coast Guard will be able to prevent undetected intrusion by monitoring the movement of vessels plying along the coastline.
Officials said this would also help enhance the efficacy of search-and-rescue operations co-ordinated by the Coast Guard.
