Bengal to instal 'early warning system' for flood

In an attempt to minimise damage caused by floods, the West Bengal government has decided to instal early warning systems in association with the World Bank.
"The early warning system will be the first of its kind in the country. It will be launched in all floods-prone districts including Darjeeling, Malda, Murshidabad, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore," state Irrigation Minister Rajib Banerjee said here today.
Speaking on the sidelines of a CII event, Banerjee said that it was a Rs 20-crore project. The Central Water Commission has assured of clearing the project at a joint meeting shortly.
The project has been approved by the World Bank, he said.

Banerjee said that after this World Bank-funded project, the government aims to rope in the multilateral agency for more development projects in the state like irrigation.
