Benicio Del Toro calls for more representation of Puerto Ricans in US govt

"Sicario: Day of the Soldado" star Benicio Del Toro says if Puerto Rico citizens will not have a right to vote in the US, the situation in the disaster-prone country will not change.

The 51-year-old actor said Puerto Rico, which is an unincorporated US territory was slowly recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria last September but he wanted to see the government take more initiative, USA Today reported.

"They're getting back to normal. I was there about two weeks ago. Everything is getting back to normal, it's taking a while.

"The bottom line is, every American citizen that lives in Puerto Rico, if they don't get a right to vote or to have representation in Congress, nothing is really going to change," Del Toro said on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert".

Puerto Ricans are American citizens and may traverse freely between the island and the mainland, the territory does not have a vote in the US Congress. They have one non-voting member of the House of Representatives called a Resident Commissioner.

When Colbert asked Del Toro if he would want to take a political plunge, the actor said "Not at all.
