The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking operates around 3,800 buses in the metropolis.
The undertaking is procuring 303 buses at a cost of Rs 55 lakh each from Tata Motors and the first batch of 75 buses was inducted today.
Aditya Thackeray, chief of the Shiv Sena's youth wing, flagged off the new buses at a function held in Wadala depot.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, "We need hybrid or electric buses to curb pollution and save fuel cost."
"Mumbaikars need one common and integrated pass for travelling on local, mono, metro trains and BEST buses. BEST also needs a mobile application to give updated info on its services," he said.

The civic administration has decided to operate these bright red buses on longer routes, stretching from South Mumbai to different parts of the metropolis and its extended suburbs, said an official.
Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar said the BMC has already provided Rs 100 crore to BEST for buying new buses.
"We know BEST is witnessing financial crunch and its deficit has reached up to Rs 1900 crore. But, BMC and BEST are working together to bridge this deficit," he said.
The driving seat as well as gears are adjustable and blowers have been installed near the seats, he said.
