"The students held a protest as they demanded an enquiry into the scholarship scam that recently surfaced and demanded that action should be taken against whosoever is found guilty in this," a police officer said.
He said that the protest remained by and large peaceful, "the students also demanded that the officials who have been holding the similar positions for the past ten years must also be shifted to other departments as it has encouraged nepotism in the university," he said.
The BGSBU 'scholarship scam' came to light on May 20 when an official of the Jammu and Kashmir bank, lodged a written complaint in Darhal Police Station regarding the misappropriation of scholarship funds meant for students of the university and the fraudulent transactions of cheques from the Darhal branch of the bank.
The investigation revealed that an official of the university would pass on the cheque numbers issued in favour of students to a bank employee who in turn would transfer the amount in the accounts of his relatives.
