The state cabinet, which met here last evening under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, approved the proposal to this effect, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who holds additional charge of Forest and Environment Ministry, was present.

Official sources said 598.45 square Km area of the reserve would be core area while another 300.93 square Km has been classified as a buffer zone in the tiger reserve, located in Bagaha about 350 Km north-west from Patna.

The Supreme Court had recently slapped a fine on six states, including Bihar, for failing to notify buffer and core zones in the tiger projects located in their respective states.

The notification would help check encroachments inside the tiger reserve, track poachers and also keep an eye on the tigers whose number have been declining over the past few decades.
