This was stated by Minister In-Charge Home Vijay Chaudhary in the state Assembly in reply to a short notice question by leader of Opposition Abdul Bari Siddiqui.
The minister said that while 8662 cases against women, including those of rape and gangrape, were pending across the state in 2008 it rose to 10,231 in 2011.
The state government was sensitive towards crime against women and dealing with the pending cases on priority basis.
Chaudhary referred to a case of gangrape of a dalit in Saharsa which was solved within 22 days and three persons were given life sentence by the court recently.
