The rural department has built 8,500 km roads between April 2012 and March 2013, Rural Development Minister Bhim Singh told reporters here.
The government has set a target to construct 50,000 km roads in five years, the minister said, adding that the government is very strict in maintaining the quality.
To ensure the quality, legal action has been initiated against more than 36 engineers and 1,140 contractors.
The government, he said, is mulling bringing a rural road maintenance policy to keep a close watch over quality of roads in rural areas.
