A 12-year old girl, bound to wheelchair due to arthritis caused by a congenital disorder, is now back on her legs thanks to a bilateral hip replacement surgery at a city hospital.
The girl, studying in class six, underwent the surgery in January last and was now able to walk, Rex Hospital Chief Surgeon and Director Dr Rex, told reporters today.
He claimed this was the first time in the country that the bilateral hip replacement was performed on a 12-year old girl.
The girl from nearby Tirupur was suffered from arthritis of multiple joints and remained crippled and bound to wheelchair.
Her condition was disagonsed as spondyloepiphyseal displasia, causing gross disturbance in growth and developed fixed deformity of the leg with severe pain at night.
A special miniature hip replacement implant to suit her size was imported and fixed without compromising future growth, he said.
