The conference will deliberate on the rapidly changing political, social and religious scenario and prepare the plan that would be a broad-based moral, spiritual, social, educational and people-oriented outline with the direction and priorities for churches in India, church sources said.
The conference also marks the occasion of the silver jubilee of the formation of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and the Golden Jubilee of the Vailankanni Basilica.
Over 172 Bishops from various parts of the world and ambassador of the Pope in India Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio are among those expected to attend the conference.
On the last day of the conference, a new church, built at Vailankanni, would be consecrated.
Pope Benedict the XVI is sending his emissary Cardinal Fernando Filoni, the Prefect of the Congregation of the Evangelisation of Peoples, for the consecration of the 'Morning Star Church', the sources said.
The church has no intermediate columns inside and can accommodate over 15,000 people.
