An alumni group of Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) today staged a protest here demanding justice for a 31-year-old railway engineer who was found dead at his residential quarters in Kharagpur under mysterious circumstances.
The decomposed body of Sourabh Kumar Rao, a purchase officer of railways store department in Kharagpur, was found on September 22 after police broke into the quarters following complaints by locals that foul smell was emanating from there.
Holding a candle light march at Jantar Mantar here, BIT Sindri Alumni Association claimed Rao was an honest person who had refused taking bribe from some local mafia members.
Stating that Rao had the authority to pass (or reject) tenders for scrap metal sale and other railway works, BIT alumnus Zakir Hussain said the railway officer was killed as he had tried to stop some irregularities.
Pranoy Kumar, former general secretary of the association, said they were holding protests in 24 states, including Ranchi, Kolkata and Banglore, and added that they would also give a representation to the Prime Minister's Office as well as Railway Minister and Home Minister tomorrow seeking a CBI probe in the alleged murder case.
They said they would also meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee seeking an impartial probe by the police.
An engineering graduate from BIT, Sindri near Dhanbad, Rao worked as a store supervisor for the Indian Railways at the Kharagpur depot.

Rao's family has alleged that his death was not investigated for 10 days and after the post-mortem report was deemed "inconclusive", the police took little action.
The alumni members alleged that even before the post mortem report came, the local police came to the conclusion that Rao died "due to snake bite", though there were blood stains at several places at his house.
Dissatisfied with the police's probe, Rao's family and friends started a campaign for justice on the social media which prompted the railway minister to intervene and forced the police to file a case of murder.
