In an attempt to pacify the adverse publicity over possession of more than one house under discretionary quota by the family members of BJD MP Kalpataru Das, his MLA son Pranab Kumar Balabantray today surrendered a flat allotted in his name.
"I am to inform you that on moral ground, I have surrendered the flat to the Bhubaneswar Development Authority to upkeep the image of the party and your leadership," Balabantray said in a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Stating that he has requested the BDA authorities to conduct an inquiry, Balabantray said in the letter that the probe findings be made public.
As the matter was raised in the Assembly, Balabantray, an MLA from Dharmasala in Jajpur district, also requested the BDA authority to inform the probe outcome to the Assembly for the information of the members.
In his surrender letter addressed to the vice-chairman of BDA, Balabantray said he has been surrendering the flat no E-09 at Netaji Subash Enclave, Gadakana, in view of a series of allegations and adverse publicity. He was allotted the flat under discretionary quota of the BDA chairman on January 14, 2008.
Allegations against Das was that his family had taken three houses and plots under discretionary quota. While one plot was allotted in name of Das's wife Pratima Das, one flat was in favour of his son Balabantray (now elected to Assembly) and another in name of Balabantray's company.
Das had all along claimed that there had been no irregularity in the matter.
