Continuing attack on Rahul Gandhi for his remarks that Pakistani agencies were approaching Muzaffarnagar riot victims, the BJP today asked the Election Commission to initiate action against him for "breaching election laws."
"Rahul's statement comes at a time when there is an atmosphere of elections in the country. EC should take action against him for the statement," party spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said.
She asked how could intelligence officials brief the Congress Vice President.
"In what capacity has Intelligence Bureau discussed the matter with Rahul Gandhi. It is a breach of protocol. IB reports to Prime Minister and union Home Minister. They need to explain this," Lekhi said.
She said if the information revealed by Rahul was correct, then the Centre should clarify what action was it mulling to take. In the backdrop of this revelation, Lekhi also questioned the rationale behind dialogue with Pakistan.
In a public rally at Indore in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh yesterday, Rahul had said that intelligence agencies in Pakistan were approaching some victims of Muzaffarnagar riots.
Rahul had said he was told by an intelligence official that intelligence agencies of Pakistan had established contact with a group of 10-15 Muslim youngsters, who had lost their kin in the riots.
Lekhi criticised Rahul for repeatedly raising the issue of assassination of his grandmother and father "to evoke people's sympathy", and said "they lost their lives because of wrong policies on the political front.
