BJP calls 'Barak Bandh', Cachar situation under control

The BJP today called a 'Barak Bandh' tomorrow to protest against the arrest of party leaders, including an MLA, for allegedly making inflammatory speeches leading to tension in Cachar district.
Tension has been brewing in the district after some objectionable materials were found near a temple in Tarapur area of Silchar town following which seven persons, including some BJP activists, were arrested yesterday, police officials said.
Soon, Silchar BJP MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, Cachar district BJP President Kaushik Rai and Cachar Yuva Morcha President Rajesh Das along with party workers came out on the streets to protest against the arrest and allegedly some inflammatory speeches led to their arrest.
Police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the mob and the district administration later imposed Section 144 IPC to prevent any deterioration of the situation.
The BJP leaders were later released, Cachar Superintendent of Police Rajveer Singh said.
The situation was under control and was being monitored closely, he said.

The district administration has also called a meeting of different political, social and cultural organisations tomorrow to ensure peace in the district.
BJP state unit General Secretary Rajdeep Roy said police action against its leaders was "high-handed and motivated" action.
He said the party has called a 12-hour Barak bandh tomorrow to protest against alleged police high-handedness, demand transfer of the Superintendent of Police and a judicial inquiry into the incident.
