The Bharatiya Janata Party today demanded a Special Investigation Team inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the farmers' loan waiver scheme alleging that the central government had been lax in its approach on the issue.
"Although the Prime Minister has assured stringent action against the defaulters, if any, (responsible for) the alleged "syphoning off" of farmers' money... In the wake of the CAG report, we want to know why was there a delay in taking action," BJP national secretary Kirit Somaiya told reporters here.
"About two-and-a-half months back, the CAG had sent a note to the government in connection with the scheme and had also pointed out that the actual scam would be of an enormous magnitude... We want to know what the PM was waiting for till now," he asked.
Somaiya said that there had been irregularities worth Rs 10,000 crore in the loan waiver scheme of Rs 52,000 crore which was launched in 2008 and called for a probe by SIT into the matter.
