Delhi BJP today targeted city Government for hike in price of CNG and piped cooking gas, saying it will have a cascading effect on the common man.
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), the firm that sells CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas (PNG) to households in the national capital, had hiked the rates on Saturday.
The BJP held a protest at Khajuri Khas area in East Delhi demanding immediate roll back of the hike in prices of CNG and PNG.
Price of CNG has been increased from Rs 41.90 to Rs 45.60 per kg while price of piped cooking gas, called PNG, for households has been hiked from Rs 24.50 per standard cubic meters to Rs 27.50 per scm.
"Instead of taking steps to bring down prices of essential commodities including the food items, the government has allowed hike in CNG and PNG prices. The BJP demands an immediate roll back of CNG and PNG prices," Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said.
He said prices of CNG, used for public transport, have been increased 12 times in the last five years.

"The prices of petrol, diesel and LPG in 1999 during the BJP regime in Delhi were Rs. 23.80 per litre, Rs. 9.94 per litre and Rs. 146 per LPG cylinder respectively. Now petrol is selling at Rs. 74.10 per litre, diesel at Rs. 51.97 per litre and LPG at Rs. 800-900 if a family crosses the quota set by the government," said Goel.
Goel drove an auto-rickshaw at Khajuri Khas chowk, expressing his solidarity with the auto-rickshaw drivers and commuters in the wake of the hike in prices of CNG.
"The hike in CNG prices would lead to acute pressure for increase in auto and taxi fares which will further burden the finances of the common commuters in Delhi," he said.
A number of auto-rickshaw drivers also participated in the protest.
Scores of BJP workers also held a separate protest at Gole market area of the city protesting increasing prices of essential commodities.
