After the killing of a BJP worker in West Bengal's Birbhum district allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters, party president Rajnath Singh has decided to send a group of BJP leaders to that state to assess the killing and attacks on party supporters there.
The 'study group' will be led by BJP vice president and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Punj, party's co-in-charge in West Bengal Siddharth Nath Singh will be its convener, Bihar MP Kirti Azad and party's minorities wing head Abdul Rashid will be among other members, as per an official statement released here today.
The decision comes in the wake of the death of BJP worker Seikh Rahim allegedly by TMC supporters following a clash between two groups at Kanur village under Illambazar police station area of West Bengal's Birbhum district on June 7.
This is the second delegation of party leaders to visit West Bengal in the wake of repeated incidents of attack on BJP workers and supporters in that state.
The BJP president had earlier sent a five-member team comprising of party vice presidents and MPs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and S S Ahluwalia, along with national spokesperson and MP Meenakshi Lekhi, besides its Asansol MP Babul Suprio and Sidhharth Nath Singh to assess the ground situation there.
The West Bengal unit of BJP has claimed that more than 200 of its workers have been injured in post-poll violence. It has told the State Government that unless it maintains law and order, it would seek the Governor's intervention.
The ruling Trinamool Congress has refuted these charges and accused BJP of fomenting violence.
BJP has won two Lok seats in West Bengal-- Ahluwalia from Darjeeling and Supriyo in Asansol.
The party also saw a rise in its vote share in the state in the Lok Sabha polls as it got 16.8 per cent votes, a little behind 22.7 per cent of CPI(M) and 39.3 per cent of Trinamool Congress.
