The alleged incident took place last evening when party supporters were celebrating the Gujarat Chief Minister's formal nomination by BJP for the top post by bursting crackers, which resulted in huge traffic snarls in many busy junctions of the city, police said today.
Sources said Umara police sub-inspector Z I Shaikh, who was on bandobast duty near Parle Point here, asked BJP workers and supporters including the MLA and the ex-Mayor Rajendra Desai, to restrain celebrations following which an argument ensued between cops and party workers.
"A fierce argument broke out between the PSI and BJP workers in which the BJP MLA and his supporters allegedly used a slang against Shaikh," Umara Police Station Officer K B Vataliya told PTI.
Police said the MLA and others threatened Shaikh saying "Our government is in power and we will see you".
