Opposition BJP today questioned the government's special package for Naxals who surrender, expressing fear that it may encourage more people to turn ultras.
It also criticised the government's Naxal surrender strategy which includes Rs 5 lakh loan-cum-grant to those who surrender and Rs 5,000 per month for those interested in obtaining skill development training after surrendering.
The government would also be providing free legal assistance to the surrendered Naxals who are under trial as per this programme.
Raising the issue in the Assembly during Question Hour, BJP's Sunil Kumar V said, "Such package will only encourage more people to join Naxal activities; rather government should solve local issues in the Naxal affected regions."
Responding to Kumar, Home Minister K J George said a district-level committee headed by respective Deputy Commissioners would collect all details about the surrendered persons, will keep a watch on their activities and make a recommendation for the facilities to the state committee that has powers to accept or reject the recommendation made.
He said government was also taking all necessary steps to improve the quality of life of tribals living in the Naxal affected regions. Changes have been made in rules so as to induct them in the police force.
