BJP today threatened to launch protest agitation across all blocks and at district headquarters if the National Conference (NC)-led state government failed to address the issues of farmers.
"State working committee of BJP resolves that if the NC-Congress coalition government fails to adopt reforms and address the miseries of farmers in the state, then BJP will organise protests, demonstrations, dharnas at all mandal and district levels against the government," the party said in a resolution here today.
Insisting that the country was facing massive agrarian crisis, BJP in its executive committee meeting asked for drastic measures to save farmers and ensure food security.
The party alleged that the public exchequer was drained on construction of canals across the state, but work has been left mid way, with no enquiry being made to ascertain reasons behind the closure.
Some of the major canals taken up by the state government in 70s and 80s, but work was left mid way. However, from time to time, bills worth lakhs of rupees were drawn in favour of theses projects, the party alleged.
The party demanded a high level committee be constituted to enquire into multi-crore irrigation canal projects, on which public money was been spent by successive governments in the state and fix responsibilities against errant officials.
Despite having signed an agreement with the neighbouring state of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir was not getting adequate water supply for irrigation and other purposes as per the agreement, resulting to miseries for farmers in Kathua and Samba districts, the party said.
