BJP today welcomed the handing over of top ULFA leader Anup Chetia, who was a fugitive for over two decades, to India by Bangladesh, and termed the move as a "great success," of the Modi Government at the Centre.
"It's a great success and a big achievement of the Central Government. We have congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this (handing over of Chetia to India)," BJP spokesperson Shrikant Sharma said here.
He said India has developed diplomatic relations with different countries under the leadership of prime Minister Modi, and the policy of "zero tolerance" towards terrorism, adding, "because of such initiatives countries whether UAE or Bangladesh are cooperating with India on such issues."
48-year-old Chetia, the founder general secretary of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), is wanted for killings, abductions, bank robberies and extortion activities was today handed over to India by Bangladesh.
Earlier, India had managed deportation of Mumbai underworld don Chhota Rajan from Indonesia.
On the Karnataka issue, where a local VHP leader died and several others were injured when violence erupted yesterday over celebrations of the birth anniversary of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan, the BJP spokesperson questioned the silence of the people, who protested against the "growing intolerance," over killing.
"It is shameful that the people who were protesting against the so-called intolerance are keeping quite on this issue (the death of the VHP leader). They spoke about Dadri incident and Kalburgi (murder) which happened in the states not governed by BJP. But now when there is a genuine case, they are keeping quite. This is questionable and shows that these people are selective," he said.
