BJP was a major winner in Assam, bagging seven of the 14 Lok Sabha seats, while Congress managed only three prompting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to announce he would resign taking responsibility for the party's debacle in the state.
Principal Opposition party AIUDF won three seats and an Independent one.
When trends started indicating a dismal performance for Congress, Gogoi announced that he would submit his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi accepting full responsibility.
"Prior to the polls, I had said, I would step down if the party fails to win more than seven seats and Tarun Gogoi is not a man who will go back on his words," he said.
BJP gained three seats from its 2009 tally of four and lost one, AIUDF gained two from its earlier tally of one while the Congress lost five of its seven seats and gained one while ally Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) lost the Kokrajhar seat to an Independent candidate.
BJP made inroads in traditional Congress bastion of Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Jorhat, retained the prestigious Gauhati, Nowgong and Mangaldoi seats, wrested Tezpur from AGP, but lost the key Silchar constituency to Congress.
Congress lost Barpeta and Karimganj (SC) to AIUDF, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, retained Kaliabor and Autonomous District (ST) and wrested Silchar from BJP.
AIUDF's party President Badruddin Ajmal retained Dhubri constituency for a second consecutive term.
In trouble-torn Kokrajhar(ST) constituency, Independent candidate and a former ULFA battalion commander Naba (Hira) Sarania retained the seat by winning by a record margin of 3,55,779 votes.
