In a unique feat for a Bengali film, this year's blockbuster "Belaseshe" is now slated to be made in other regional languages.
"The film has been the highest grosser in recent times. 'Belaseshe', which tells the story of people, is now set to have remakes in Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Telugu and Punjabi languages," director Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay-Nandita Roy told PTI here.
The duo, who said the original Bengali film has notched up over Rs four crore till now thereby setting a record, affirmed "We don't believe in niche films. And all over the world there had been only good films and bad films. We believe in bridging the urban and rural audience and 'Belaseshe' has achieved the same."
To a question, Shiboprosad said, "Though we believe language can't be the barrier in narrating the story of human ties running through different generations, we won't be comfortable to work in other languages. The remakes will be done by film makers who are well-versed in their respective languages.
"We are not shifting base from Kolkata and will leave the job to those who can handle it better," he said to a related question.
Prominent theatre personality Swatilekha Sengupta, who shared screen space with thespian Soumitra Chatterjee in Belaseshe, recalled during the film's 100th day screening last weekend about having received a congratulatory note from megastar Amitabh Bachchan for her role in the film.
"In the note which Amitji began as 'from one artiste to another', he encouraged me to do more such roles which can win the hearts of people the way Belaseshe did. There was a definite poignant, human touch in his gesture," Swatilekha said.
"Amitji had also tweeted about our film. His tweet and now the personal note to Swatilekha is actually a morale booster for the whole team. If the film is made in Hindi and Amitji and Jaya Bacchan enact the role of the elderly couple as suggested by a director friend in his tweet, that will be another defining moment in popular, mainstream Indian cinema," Shiboprosad, having earlier delivered a string of blockbusters on social issues, said.
"While the film completed 100 days in Inox here during prime time shows, a first for any bengali film, the earnings have almost been equal in single screens in the districts which virtually effected a turnaround in their fortunes," the Ichhe director said.
