Shiv Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today asked Maharashtra government to abolish toll on vehicles at entry and exit points in the city.
This demand is raised by BMC standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale in his letter to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.
"The state government has collected toll in lieu of other projects done by them. However, the BMC which maintains the city roads does not collect toll in any form", Shewale said.
The state government should provide relief to the citizens by doing away with the road tax, he added.
"However, it is the state government and not the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) which is collecting toll when vehicles enter the city", Shewale added.
The protests for abolition of toll have become stringent with the suspected Shiv Sena activists damaging and torching a number of toll booths in Western Maharashtra city of Kolhapur recently.
