A senior inspector of the Vigilance Department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and a newspaper vendor were today caught by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a hawker, official said.
"The accused-- senior inspector Santosh Pandurang Sawant (49)-- had demanded Rs 10,000 bribe per month from a hawker in order to allow him to run his business by roadside," official said.
According to the official, Sawant had told the hawker to hand over the money to the newspaper seller-- Tushar Surve (56).
The hawker approached the ACB and lodged a complaint against Sawant, the official added.
"This morning, a trap was laid at the BMC headquarters. When the complainant came to give the money to Sawant, the latter asked him to hand over the amount to a newspaper seller," official said.
As soon as the newspaper seller accepted the bribe amount, the ACB sleuths nabbed him on the spot.
Further investigation into the case is on.
