The body of an 8-year-old boy was found inside a plastic bag on Monday in Panvel in Raigad district, over 50 kilometres from here, police said.
Local passersby who saw the bag near Kundevahal on Uran-Palaspe road alerted police, an official said.
"The 8-year-old boy was wearing a t-shirt and black half pants. It seems the boy was strangled. We are awaiting the post mortem report. A murder case has been registered," said Navi Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe.
"The CCTV footage of the area is being checked. The boy may be from one of the villages nearby. Missing complaints filed with Navi Mumbai police and adjoining areas are being checked as well," Dudhe said.
