Body of a Mumbai-based trekker, who had fallen into a deep gorge in Miyar valley in tribal Lahaul-Spiti district, was today handed over to his family members after post-mortem.
Richard Khear fell into the gorge on August 29 while trying to climb the Caste Peak.
"His body, retrieved by rescue teams of Army yesterday, was air-lifted and flown to Udaipur and handed over to his family members. It would be taken to Chandigarh by road and then by air to Mumbai," SDM Keylong S S Rathore said.
The deceased's parents, who are in Udaipur for the past few days, expressed their gratitude to the Army for having retrieved their son's mortal remains.
The young mountaineer had come to the valley with his NRI friend Sheriar. They were scaling 17,000-ft high Mount Castle peak in Miyar Valley when Richard fell into the gorge due to an equipment failure.
The rescue team comprised of mountaineers from Indian Army's High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS).
