Several thousand bogus ration cards in Goa would be discarded once the digitisation process is completed, a state minister said today.

The digitisation of ration cards has already begun, and Bardez taluka would be the first one to have its documents in the digital format by September 15 this year, state Civil Supplies Minister Dayanand Mandrekar told the Legislative Assembly here.

"We are aware about thousands of bogus ration cards existing in the state. Once digitisation process is completed, we will come to know about the genuine cards while rest of those would be automatically discarded," he said during the Question Hour.

Out of total 70,000, only 44,000 people turned up for digitisation of the cards in Bardez taluka, indicating the extent of bogus cards existing in the state, he said.

"We have already cancelled several thousand bogus ration cards when they were brought to our notice," Mandrekar said.

He also said that only 80% of the people turn up to take grains at Public Distribution System (PDS) shops.

"There are some families who don't turn up to lift their quota," he said, adding that during the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, 100% quota would be provided to the shops.
