India is the World Bank's single largest borrower with its cumulative borrowings touching USD 103 billion in December 2015, a book that traces the over seven decades India-World Bank relationship said.
The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), part of the World Bank, had lent USD 53 billion and the International Development Association, another World Bank agency, USD 50 billion to India over seven decades, the book said.
The World Bank came into being in 1944.
The book "Reflective Shadows:Political Economy of World Bank Lending to India" traces the journey of India-World Bank relationship that had evolved from "skepticism into friendship".
"It (the relationship) has weathered many ups and slowdowns and turned into a symbiotic equation. Therefore, the Bank's role in India has been essentially as of a partner..," argues the book authored by Dr Nagesh Prabhu, Deputy Editor with 'The Hindu' in Bengaluru.
Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Seetharaman released the book, published by the Oxford University Press, at a function here today.
Seetharaman lauded the efforts of the author in bringing out the book.
Present on the occasion were R S Deshpande, Director, Centre for Development Studies, PES University, Bengaluru and Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath President B L Shankar.
