A series of new books with titles like "Bhabho bhains", "Gappi Cycle wala" and "Hathi aur chinti" bring alive age-old stories for children in a comic format.
The books - a total of 19 titles in hindi and two in Telugu - all intended for early grade reading by non-profit organisation 'Room to Read' were launched here late last evening by former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor on the occasion of International Literacy Day.
The books are a part of the Book Publishing program of the organisation, which it says is currently operational in nine states in partnership with the state governments.
"...Today's kids have access to much more literature in English than mythological or historical tales. There is a growing interest in non-English books for children too," Tharoor said.
Tharoor said children today needed an incentive to read and to inculcate "an addiction to read."
"One healthy addiction that we all can praise today is the addiction to books and to do that we need books of good quality, well produced and in language that the child already speaks, hears around himself," he said.
The non-profit organisation claims says its illustrated books find place in government primary schools across nine states.
"There exists a dearth of good quality children's books at early grade which are age-appropriate, culturally sensitive and able to unlock a child's imaginative potential," says Sourav Banerjee, Literacy Director, Room to Read.
