The price of bread would go up by Rs four per pound from either before Durga Puja or after the festive season in October.
"The way the prices of raw materials for bread and other bakery products have increased, there was no other way than to hike the price. We have decided to increase the price of bread by Rs four per pound from before or after Durga Puja," Lok Sabha MP Idris Ali, who is the secretary of Joint Action Committee of West Bengal Bakers' Association, said.
Stating that there are nearly 4,000 bakeries in the state, Ali, a Trinamool Congress MP, added that these would become commercially unviable unless the prices were increased.
Prices of bread in the state were last increased three years ago in September 2013.
At present, a normal slice bread costs Rs 18 per pound in West Bengal.
