Britain's Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, will start her first day of school in a week's time, Kensington Palace said on Thursday.

The four-year-old royal, who is fourth in line to the British throne after her grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and brother Prince George, will begin school on September 5 at the start of the term in the United Kingdom.

"Princess Charlotte, accompanied by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge [William and Kate] and Prince George, will attend her first day of school at Thomas's Battersea on Thursday, September 5," a Kensington Palace spokesperson said.

Charlotte will attend the same south London school as her six-year-old brother George.

"We are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have decided that Princess Charlotte will join her elder brother, Prince George, at Thomas's Battersea," said Simon O'Malley, Headmaster at Thomas's Battersea.

"We greatly look forward to welcoming her and all of our new pupils to the school in September," he said.

The prestigious private school usually charges GBP 19,287 a year in fees, but the royal family will be getting a sibling's discount price of GBP 18,915.

Kate Middleton had missed out on Prince George's first day of school due to acute morning sickness when she was pregnant with her third child, Prince Louis.

The 37-year-old was forced to pull out of several engagements due to the illness, the same with her other two pregnancies.

Prince William took Prince George to school two years ago, when he was snapped carrying his son's school bag.

The palace will release official photographs to mark Princess Charlotte in her new school uniform, as they were for Prince George's first day of school.
