British tourist found dead

A 52-year-old British tourist was found dead at a guest house in the Manikarnika ghat area under Chowk police station yesterday, officials said Tuesday.

Kevin John McMahon from Southampton in UK was staying with his girlfriend Catherine Gallagher (47), they said.

He had stomach pain Sunday evening and when the guesthouse staff suggested that he consult a doctor, McMahon refused and stayed in his room, said the police officials.

On Monday, he was found dead inside the room, they said.

McMahon and Gallagher arrived in Varanasi on September 18, the officials said adding the duo was in India since July 30.

The British tourist was unwell from past some time, an official said.

His condition deteriorated late Sunday night and he vomited blood.

Gallagher reportedly told a newspaper that they had informed the staff of the guest house for a medical help doctors were contacted but McMahon could not receive treatment on time and he died.

The British High Commission in New Delhi was informed and the body was handed over to embassy officials for autopsy, officials said.

Police is treating the case as 'highly sensitive' and investigations are on, they said adding the autopsy report was being awaited.
