Unidentified miscreants killed a brother of a policeman allegedly involved in torturing Balsan Marak who later died in custody last week in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district, police said today.
Shom Sonar, a rickshaw driver by profession, was brutally murdered by armed unidentified miscreants in Tura town at around 10 pm last night, they said.
He was found beaten up with an iron rod in the head and also shot, official sources said.
Shom was the brother of the personal security officer of the SP, who along with other cops allegedly beat up Balsan Marak outside the police station hours after he was arrested on May 13.
While Balsan's death on May 20 under judicial custody had already aroused public anger, death of another person in the police lock-up at Chokpot in South Garo Hills day before yesterday aggravated the situation, a senior police officer said.
Refusing to divulge details, West Garo Hills police said the matter is under investigation and they would wait for the post-mortem report.

"We are investigating the matter and looking at all possible angles. It is always painful when a young man loses his life in such undesirable circumstances," district superintendent of police (SP) Mukesh Singh said.
Meanwhile, a 24 hours curfew was imposed from 3 PM yesterday in neighbouring South Garo Hills district's Chokpot block after angry mobs torched police vehicles following the death of a youth in a police station there.
Three cars and six motorcycles were torched inside the police station while 6 policemen were also injured in the skirmish.
Acting deputy commissioner T G Momin took stock of the situation and said, "The situation is under control though curfew remains in place since Thursday afternoon. There have been no untoward incidents reported."
"If there are no untoward incidents we may lift the curfew on Saturday morning for about five to six hours to allow people to purchase food items. But that will depend on the situation," Momin said.
