Bru refugee families to get Rs 4L each, free ration for 2 yrs: MHA official

Bru refugee families, who will be repatriated to Mizoram from Tripura, would be given a one-time financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh, a house and free ration for two years as per an agreement, Home Ministry officials said today.

The families will also be given a monthly assistance of Rs 5,000, they said.

Each of the 5,407 families will be given the one-time financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to be kept as fixed deposit in the name of the head of the family within one month of repatriation as per the Bru Migrants Repatriation Agreement, a senior Home Ministry official said.

The cost of the entire exercise will be Rs 435 crore till 2020-21.

The agreement to repatriate the total 32,876 people belonging to the Bru community was signed by the Centre and the governments of Mizoram and Tripura yesterday. The Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) was also signatory to the pact.

The displaced people are currently living in temporary camps in Tripura and will be repatriated to Mizoram before September 30.

Each resettled family will be given a cash assistance of Rs 5,000 per month along with free ration for two years. The Bru families shall receive house building assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh to be disbursed in three instalments as per the agreement, the official said.

The Bru people from Mizoram have been living in various camps in Tripura since 1997.

The Tripura government will ensure that Aadhaar cards are issued to all of them, a bank account is opened and updation of ration cards is undertaken for each of the Bru migrant families.

This process will be completed by September 30.

Eklavya residential schools, making available Jhum cultivation land, issuance of permanent residential and ST certificates, and a special development project for Bru families are the other measures planned for the cohesive resettlement of these families in Mizoram.

The Mizoram government will ensure security of all repatriated refugees who were identified and verified as per the 1997 electoral rolls of Mizoram.

Around 8,000 Bru refugees have gone back to Mizoram since 1997 in six batches and they have been living peacefully in the state, another official said.

The central government, so far, has given Rs 348.90 crore to the Tripura government for the expenses it incurred for maintenance of the Bru familes and Rs 68.90 crore to the Mizoram government for providing assistance to the 8,000 Bru refugees who had already gone back to the state.
