Border Security Force (BSF) has seized huge quantity of marijuana worth Rs 25 lakh from Baijjantipur, a bordering area, about 35 km from here, BSF sources said today.
Acting on a tip-off, a contingent of BSF and state excise department personnel raided the area yesterday and recovered a plastic bag full of ganja, which the smugglers wanted to throw over the barbed wire fencing.
"During search of a jungle area at the zero point in the Baijantipur-Kripali border area, the security personnel recovered around 400 kg of marijuana worth Rs 25 lakh," S Murlidhar, deputy commandant of the 195 battalion of BSF said.
There were rackets involved in illegal cultivation of cannabis, particularly in the bordering areas taking advantage of the sparse habitations and the narcotics were smuggled to Bangladesh from where the contraband was further smuggled to Middle-East, Murlidhar said.
BSF was carrying out operations against the marijuana and phensedyl syrup smugglers throughout the state.
Till December last, the BSF destroyed Bangladesh-bound ganja worth more than Rs eight crore and other contraband worth Rs 15 crore in Tripura, he added.
