The Border Security Force (BSF) has begun to make use of the Gujarat government's Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG) project for its communication needs, official sources said here today.
"Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had inaugurated the BSF's use of Gujarat government's BISAG project. It is a unique initiative by the government which will help us communicate better," Deputy Inspector General (DGI) of BSF General Branch M P S Bhathi told PTI.
Bhathi said that BSF soldiers living thousands of kilometres away from their near ones, would be able to video conference with their families using this network.
BISAG is the Gujarat government's nodal agency to facilitate use of spatial and geo-spatial technologies for planning and developmental activities.
So far, it has only been used for agriculture, land and water resource management, wasteland and watershed development, forestry, infrastructure, education as well as disaster management.
Yesterday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had inaugurated the BSF's use of BISAG at the BSF camp in Kutch district in Gujarat.
