Elephants usually cross over to their feeding grounds in Bangladesh across the border from the thick jungles of Garo Hills and use the same route to return to feed in the jungles of Garo Hills, they said.

In the process, the elephants destroy anything that come their way, destroy the border fence and crops besides killing security forces.

In this backdrop, BSF came up with the idea of allowing free passage to the pachyderms along the identified elephant corridors in the Garo Hills district, Sudesh Kumar, IG BSF Meghalaya Frontier said.

The construction of the "special fence" from Mahendraganj to Purakhasi along the international border has also been discussed with officials of the forest department of the state government, who, in principle agreed to the idea, he said.

The design of the special fence would be in such a way that in areas designated as elephant corridors, the fence would be raised to an extend to allow these animals to cross to and fro Bangladesh, the official said.

However, in areas where the special fence are built, a watch tower would also be erected for the troops to provide a bird's eye view of the entire free passage to check on infiltration, Kumar said.
