BSP's Rajya Sabha member and party's former state president Avtar Singh Karimpuri today demanded Centre's intervention for speedy trial in the suicide case of a Dalit sarpanch.
"A Dalit sarpanch was humiliated and mentally tortured so much by an NRI and his supporters that he ended his life by jumping before a train in Phagwara on August 31 and the police registered a case only after demonstration by BSP workers and his kins on September 1," Karimpuri said, demanding Centre's intervention to ensure speedy justice in the case.
Des Raj (40), a sarpanch of Khangura village, committed suicide after an NRI, Bagicha Singh and his supporters humiliated him.
The sarpanch had refused to sign some papers which were incomplete, which led to the spat.
A suicide note, recovered later by the police, had accused Singh and his supporters of humiliating the sarpanch.
Agitated BSP supporters led by party general secretary Jarnail Nangal, blocked train movement near Santokhpura railway crossing here on Sunday and demanded that police register a case against Bagicha Singh under Section 306 (abatement of suicide) and relevant sections of SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act.
