Buddhadeb summoned to depose before July 21 Commission
Press Trust of India Kolkata Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has been summoned to testify before a one-man Commission set up by the Trinamool Congress government to probe the police firing on youth Congress workers on July 21,1993.
Thirteen persons had died in the firing when Youth Congress workers, led by its then president Mamata Banerjee, were going in a procession to the Writers' Building, the state secretariat.
"Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has been summoned by the commission. We hope that we will be able to unravel the truth in his presence," Sushanta Chatterjee, chairman of the Commission, said.
Bhattacharya, was then a cabinet minister under Jyoti Basu's chief ministership.
Late last year, Left Front chairman Biman Bose, who was a senior CPI(M) leader at that time, deposed before the Commission. So did state power minister Manish Gupta who was then state chief secretary.
