Bullet removed from youth's neck after complex operation

The bullet was stuck between the trachea (windpipe) and common carotid artery, the vessel which supplies oxygenated blood to the brain.

"The bullet was only point 0.1 mm away from the artery (of Kunwar Singh). It was removed with utmost care during the operation which lasted about one-and-half-hour," said a doctor, who was in the seven-member team of cardiothoracic surgery department which successfully carried out the operation.

The operation was done on May 24 under the direction of Head of Cardiothoracic surgery department Dr R M Mathur, Dr Sanjeev Devgarah, Dr R S Sen, Dr Sunil Sharma, Dr Amita Yadav, Dr Biju Abraham and Dr Siddarth Sharma.

Singh was shot at by his relative following a domestic dispute in his village some days back in Bharatpur district. After primary treatment, he was referred to the Sawai Madho Singh Hospital hospital in Jaipur. The case was referred to the Cardiothoracic surgery department.

The patient is now out of danger, the doctor said.

Details of the case will now be forwarded for publication in an international journal, he added.
