The state cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, decided to store the wheat in silo bags. The task has been assigned to Madhya Pradesh Ware- Housing Corporation on a pilot basis, official sources said.

The land needed for this would be made available to the Corporation free of cost. After the bags are emptied, the land would be returned to the government.

Silo bags are airtight, three-layered polyethylene bags with a large storage capacity. The life span of these bags is 12 months in the open and they can be stored anywhere as long as the ground is clean, well drained and free of sharp objects, sources said.

Madhya Pradesh has so far procured 56 lakh MT of wheat from farmers by paying Rs 7,756 crore. Last year, during the same period, the state had procured 39 lakh MT of wheat.

For tackling the shortage of gunny bags for storing, the government has ordered 61,000 bales of plastic bags. 7,000 bales have already been received by the agencies concerned.

The cabinet also took several other decisions.
