Two senior officials of the Burn Standard Company Limited, a central government PSU, were assaulted allegedly by a group of agitating casual workers owing allegiance to Trinamool Congress trade union wing INTTUC.
Senior general manager Santanu Sarkar and DGM Debashis Bhattacharya were allegedly dragged outside their office and assaulted near a gate of the factory.
Around 175 casual workers of Burn Standard Ltd, Howrah works, had been agitating outside the factory gates since February 11 and were also on a relay hunger strike demanding regularisation and others facilities.
A group of workers led by the local TMC councillor of Howrah Municipal Corporation today met senior officials of the company over the casual workers' demands and it was during this discussion that some of the workers allegedly assaulted two senior company officials.
"Both me and deputy general manager Debashis Bhattacharya were dragged out of our office in between the talks and taken to a place near Gate no 2, where I was slapped. The DGM was also present there and he too was manhandled. Later on we have filed a complaint with the police," said Sarkar, senior general manager of the company.
Burn Standard Company Workers' Union leader and INTTUC working president Gopal Bhattacharya, however, denied any assault on the officials.
"INTTUC does not have a unit in Burn Standard. Yes, there was a meeting between the company officials and casual workers over their demands and there were some altercations. But, no one was man handled," said Bhattacharya.
