Naga M Sangma, also the brother of Samuel M Sangma, an MLA representing Baghmara constituency in South Garo Hills, was released on a 'kutcha' road near Gasuapara.
Naga, a coal trader and also involved in export business, had been abducted by four heavily armed men six days back.
"We were informed that Naga had reached home early today after the militant released him. He is safe," Western Range Inspector General of Police H Nongpluh told PTI.
He said police were trying to find out if the family members made any monetary arrangements for his release.
