The state Cabinet has given its nod to grant University status to Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) from July next year.
The proposal to grant the University status to the institute was approved in a state Cabinet meeting yesterday, HBTI Registrar Naresh Kumar told PTI today.
An Act in this regard would now be taken up by the state's Lower and Upper Houses and if it gets through it would be sent for the Governor's approval.
After all these formalities are completed HBTI would start functioning as a Technical University from July 1, 2016, Kumar said.
There will be an increase in the B.Tech and M.Tech seats and research opportunities would also go up after the university status is granted, he said.
Established as a small engineering college in 1921 by Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, the then Governor of the United Provinces of British India, the University has been operating for over 90 years, the registrar said.
