The Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the amendments in the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 to modify the list of Scheduled Castes of Odisha.
Now, after the Cabinet's approval, the Bill to include Sualgiri/Swalgiri caste in the Scheduled Caste list of Odisha will be introduced in Parliament.
Once Parliament passes it, the members of the communities will be able to derive benefits meant for Scheduled Castes under the existing schemes.
Proposal to include Sualgiri/Swalgiri caste, as per approved modalities, was found to be eligible for its inclusion as a synonym of Sabakhia caste, which is already in the list of Scheduled Castes of Odisha, according to an official statement.
The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2017 incorporating the above changes will be introduced in Parliament.
