The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Thursday said it has written to Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan seeking heavy fine and jail term to brand ambassadors and celebrities for misleading advertisements.

CAIT said in a statement that endorsement of a product is purely a commercial transaction and brand ambassadors/celebrities act as sales agent for products and the company.

"Therefore, heavy penalty & jail term should be prescribed for brand ambassadors & celebrities for misleading advertisements under the rules & regulations to be framed for Consumer Protection Act which is already passed by both houses of Parliament," it added.
