The cease work called by lawyers at the Calcutta High Court was withdrawn on the second day today following assurances by the government to address their demands.
The lawyers had gone on cease work since yesterday apprehending that the West Bengal government would pass a Bill in the Assembly raising the value of property in which the City Civil Court could hear cases from the limit of Rs 10 lakh to Rs one crore.
"I have conveyed to the Bar Library Club that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured that both the High Court and the city civil court will have concurrent jurisdiction over disputes involving property of between Rs 10 lakh and Rs one crore," West Bengal Advocate General Bimal Chatterjee said.
"While the city civil court will have exclusive jurisdiction over matters involving property valued up to Rs 10 lakhs, the high court only will hear disputes involving property worth over Rs one crore," Chatterjee said.
"Following this the Bar Library Club took a resolution withdrawing the cease work," Chatterjee said.
The Incorporated Law Society and the High Court Bar Association, which had supported the Bar Library Club's decision and joined the cease work which was called till August 27 also withdrew their agitation and decided to join work from Monday.
Claiming that the City Civil Court Amendment Bill 2012, which is yet to be passed in the Assembly, would reduce the jurisdiction of the high court, three associations of lawyers had yesterday decided on the cease work till Tuesday.
