An official spokesman said here today that there were about 500 black bucks in 26 villages of the district.
The number of black bucks was dwindling and one of the major reasons behind this was that they were being attacked by the stray dogs, he said adding the number of stray dogs in Fatehabad district is around 2,000.
The campaign to sterilize stray dogs would soon be launched in the district, the spokesman said.
He said environmentalist Maneka Gandhi had discussed the issue of canine attacks on black bucks with the district administration recently.
He said a team of officials had recently met Maneka and she has assured she would cooperate with the administration on this issue and extend necessary help to protect the black bucks.
"To to put a check on the increasing population of stray dogs, the sterilisation campaign would be launched," he said adding Rs 15 lakh would be spent for this.
Earlier this year, there had been instances where some black bucks were mauled to death and some others injured after being attacked by stray dogs in Sirsa-Fatehabad belt.
