A nationwide campaign will be launched to seek "martyr" status for legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and others in the official records of the Centre, his grandnephew Yadvender Singh Sandhu said today.
To seek the status of "martyr" in the official records of the central government for "Shaheed-e-Azam" Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and numerous others who laid down their lives during the country's freedom struggle, All India Shaheed Bhagat Singh Brigade would launch a nationwide campaign.
The brigade will kick-start the campaign with a rally on May 23 at Rewari, an illustrious nursery of soldiers as well as a hub of freedom fighters.
Sandhu, the brigade's national convener, told reporters that he was "stunned" at the response of Union Home Ministry to his RTI query in April 2013, to know about the official status of legendary heroes-- Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, who all had attained martyrdom with their execution by the British on March 23, 1931.
The ministry had then informed him that it had no record to show whether the three had been declared martyrs, he said.
Sandhu said copies of the brigade's programme were being given to all the Members of Parliament for their perusal and requisite assistance.
He said that while they had already extensively covered the states of Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and several others, their countrywide campaign would continue till achievement of the objective.
